Diane Abbott had a letter published in the Observer yesterday, arguing that while Irish, Jewish and Traveller people might suffer prejudice, they do not face racism. This was immediately and widely condemned, and Abbott swiftly responded with an apology, explaining: ‘The errors arose in an initial draft being sent.’ This proved to be insufficient, and the whip was withdrawn, pending an enquiry.
