Proud to be British

‘We must uphold British values,’ urges David Cameron. Quite what these are, however, remains somewhat ill-defined. ‘Regard for the rule of law, participation in and acceptance of democracy, equality, free speech and respect for minorities,’ suggested Theresa May in March this year, managing to sound both woolly and draconian.

What’s missing is anything specific, so we felt that it might be helpful if we provided some concrete examples of those things that make us proud to be British. And our occasional series starts with Tony Benn in 1969:
